The British Airline Pilots’ Association (BALPA) has praised the dedicated people working in the aviation industry, who they say are to thank for an increase in the growth in the number of passengers in 2016.

An analysis by BALPA of new data released by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and various airports shows the number of passengers using UK airports increased on the previous year to over 270 million in 2016.

Many UK airports reported a record-breaking year. Some with the highest increases include Belfast International (17.3 per cent), Birmingham (14.3 per cent) and Cardiff (16.0 per cent).

However, some also saw a tumble in numbers, including Bournemouth (5.6 per cent) and Aberdeen (14.8 per cent).

BALPA General Secretary, Brian Strutton, said:

“It’s great news for our industry, and a good sign for the wider economy, that passenger numbers continued to grow in 2016.

“Of particular note are the successes at Belfast International, Birmingham and Cardiff, and I hope 2017 will be a better year for airports such as Aberdeen.

“I want to pay tribute to the pilots, engineers, cabin crew, and airport staff who have worked so hard and made this possible.

“These dedicated people make our aviation industry thrive, and ensure a safe and efficient operation.

“We now need action from politicians to make sure this progress isn’t put at risk.

“We need solid reassurances for the aviation sector on Brexit and expansion as the continued uncertainty could damage confidence in investing in our industry.”
