Sensible Security – 3 steps forward and two back

Under the banner of the BALPA Sensible Security campaign, we continue to press for Flightcrew to be treated as a distinct group and for clarity on what can and cannot be taken on board.

We continue to lead a debate with our European colleagues and press European regulators that, in security terms, crews should be differentiated from passengers in terms of issues such as liquids. We are pleased to report that we have secured agreement at the European level that specifies that crew should not be prevented from carrying liquids onto the aircraft. However, despite this, the change will not be reflected in the forthcoming UK changes where crews and passengers are treated as one.

This is a distinction without a difference because both passengers and crew departing all UK airports (regardless of destination) are governed by a protocol that re- introduces liquids into the Restricted Zone. This “improvement” follows BALPA pressure and trials at Heathrow with British Airways crews.

BALPA will continue to press our agenda laid out in the Sensible Security campaign
