Concorde and 747 in battle to win Aircraft World Cup

Pilots and the public have showed their love for two iconic aircraft in an Aircraft World Cup hosted by the British Airline Pilots’ Association.

32 aircraft types started out in the competition, but only the 747 and Concorde remain as the epic final begins.

BALPA members and the public cast more than 1,800 votes in the semi-finals of the competition on Facebook and twitter to see the 747 and Concorde knock out the 757 and A380 respectively.

Today votes have opened in the final which pits the 747, an aircraft flown by many BALPA pilots, against the design classic Concorde, an aircraft BALPA had a hand in the development of

Captain Brendan O’Neal, Executive President of the British Airline Pilots’ Association said:

“Pilots are proud to be part of the aviation industry, flying these remarkable machines, ensuring passengers are safe and comfortable and helping bring more than £52 billion to the UK economy every year.

“It takes huge amounts of training and skill to fly these aircraft which are a vital part of the UK aviation industry.

“This Aircraft World Cup has been a bit of fun, but also shows the pride pilots have in the job they do and the interest and respect the public has for the aviation industry as a whole.”
