Following the long-awaited reveal of the new Government’s first budget, BALPA General Secretary Amy Leversidge said:

“We welcome the further strengthening of employment rights, particularly protections against unfair dismissal. Increasing job security will provide stability and increase economic growth.

The £1bn funding for aerospace is also a positive commitment to the sector and to UK infrastructure.

It is disappointing to see increases to Airport Passenger Duty. Such measures not only hinder the competitiveness of UK aviation in a global market but also fail to contribute to the sustainability goals we aspire to achieve. We reiterate our call for the government to either scrap APD or reinvest its revenue into developing sustainable aviation practices for the future.”

We already have some of the highest air travel taxes in the world, making it hard for UK aviation to remain competitive in the global market. Making flying less attractive to reduce passenger numbers, fails to help make air travel more sustainable. That’s why BALPA continues its call for revenue from APD to be used by the industry to develop sustainable aviation for the future.
